Sir,

Government House,
Hongkong, 5th August, 1899.

In reply to your letter No.906 of the 11th inst.
respecting the acquirement of additional land on Mount Parish by
the Admiralty I am informed that the area applied for is as much
as 107,000 square feet, and that although it is true that some
of the land is very steep and would have to be levelled by
cutting or building or both, before building sites could be
formed, it is not the area of the slope that is calculated for
selling purposes, but the level base on which it stands, and
further that, as instanced by a recent sale of land on Morrison
Hill, which realised $1 a square foot, purchasers can be found
who will bear the cost of preparing such expensive sites for
building purposes.

I am advised therefore that it would be undesirable for the Colonial Government to alienate a larger area
than that actually required for the new hospital, which I
understand to be within the limit shown in the plan by a double
...
